Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has been named the world’s third most valuable football player, behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Belgian winger is worth €99 million (£77m), according to the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) . Messi is valued at €220m (£172m), while Ronaldo’s value is pinned at €133m (£104m). Hazard is joined in the top 10 by Chelsea’s marquee summer signings Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. Costa was named as the world’s fourth most valuable player at €84m and goal-making machine Fabregas is valued at €62m (8th). Six more players feature in the top 100 – Oscar (14th; €50m), Thibaut Courtois (17th; €45m), Willian (40th; €33m), Nemanja Matic and Andre Schurrle sit joint 52nd at (€30m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (68th; €25m). Ramires (T 97th; €21m) and Gary Cahill (T 106th; €20m) also feature in the full list of 120 players. Chelsea have the joint highest number of players in the top 100 (11) alongside Real Madrid. And of the Premier League clubs, only Arsenal can match Chelsea’s nine in the top 100. Title rivals Manchester City only have six players in the top 100, as do Manchester United, despite their seventh place finish in the Premier League last season. Both clubs rise to eight in the full list. Six Liverpool players feature on both lists. The CIES calculated players’ values using its exclusive algorithm developed on the basis of over 1,500 fee paying transfers occurred since 2009. The variables included in the econometric model refer to player performance (matches, goals, assists, clean sheets, etc.), their characteristics (age, position, contract duration etc), as well as competition level and results achieved by their teams (clubs and national sides).
