Cherokee County School District students continue to exceed National averages on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills by double digits in every subject. The School District administered the test to all students in Grades 5 and 8 in October. The ITBS identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses in subject areas; monitors year-to-year growth; and provides national comparisons for academic achievement. The scores are reported in percentiles with a national average of 50; results include a composite, or total, score and scores in the sections of Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Sources of Information. The School District’s Grade 5 composite score is 68 -- 18 percentile points above the national average; the School District’s Grade 8 composite score is 66, which tops the national average by 16 percentile points. Grade 5: • In Reading, CCSD average is 64 --- 14 percentile points above National average; • In Language Arts, CCSD average is 65 --- 15 percentile points above National average; • In Mathematics, CCSD average is 67 --- 17 percentile points above National average; • In Social Studies, CCSD average is 71 --- 21 percentile points above National average; • In Science, CCSD average is 71 --- 21 percentile points above National average; and, • In Sources of Information, CCSD average is 68 --- 18 percentile points above National average. Grade 8: • In Reading, CCSD average is 63 --- 13 percentile points above National average; • In Language Arts, CCSD average is 63 --- 13 percentile points above National average; • In Mathematics, CCSD average is 63 --- 13 percentile points above National average; • In Social Studies, CCSD average is 64 --- 14 percentile points above National average; • In Science, CCSD average is 70 --- 20 percentile points above National average; and, • In Sources of Information, CCSD average is 66 --- 16 percentile points above National average. Teachers will use these results to develop individualized lessons that target each student’s specific needs. Principals and school Data Management Teams and Instructional Leadership Teams also will analyze the scores and use them in the School Improvement Planning process. “These results, like our high schools’ outstanding SAT and ACT results, show that our elementary and middle school students are competing above the National average academically, with continued achievement in all core subject areas,” Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank R.
