Chevron Readers’ Cup winners declared at sixth Emirates Airline Festival of Literature There was a buzz of excitement at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature as schools from all over the region battled each other in the finals of the Chevron Readers’ Cup. The quiz-based competition attracted more than 260 teams for the heats before the top eight teams made it through to the final.Once again, the Chevron Readers’ Cup garnered interest outside of Dubai. Schools from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Fujairah, Sharjah, Muscat and Qatar participated in the competition with Muscat International School and Fujairah Private Academy competing in the finals.The competition, which is held in Arabic and English, is divided into two groups, Primary and Secondary; both of which were hotly contested before the eventual winners were decided. The winning team receives a 2000/- AED voucher from Bookworm and runners-up receive trophies. Prizes were presented by top children’s authors Nasser Al Jaberi and Ali Al Sayegh, Christopher Bradley, Country Chairman UAE, Chevron Alkhalij and Isobel Abulhoul, Festival Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature Christopher Bradley of Chevron also took on moderating duties at the final. He said: “It has been an excellent experience sponsoring the competition. The Chevron Readers’ Cup is a wonderful way for us to achieve our goal of developing educational, health and economic opportunities; goals that align well with the LitFest’s aim to promote a culture of reading and writing among children in the UAE. “The quiz format of the competition has the dual effect of encouraging participants to read and comprehend the books prescribed as they know they have to answer questions on them. This helps increase their interest in books and reading in general. The excitement of the students is unparalleled and it is really encouraging to see their competitive spirit and drive to win,” Bradley added. “We cannot wait for 2015!” The winners in the Arabic Primary category were Al Muwakeb Garhoud in 1st place, Fujairah Private Academy in 2nd and Al Muwakeb Barsha in 3rd place. In the Arabic Secondary category, Al Safwa came in 1st place, Al Muwakeb in 2nd and Surooq in 3rd. The winners in the English Primary category were English College Team A in 1st place, English College Team B in 2nd and Jumeirah Primary School in 3rd place. In the English Secondary category, Dess School’s Team B came in 1st place, Al Diyafah High School in 2nd and Muscat International in 3rd. Congratulations to all the winners and other participants.
