Chewing the reins out of your hands is how we allow our horses to - TopicsExpress

Chewing the reins out of your hands is how we allow our horses to stretch. This video is great, not only because of my students perfect riding position, but because it shows the horse pulling and then the rider allowing. I am not going to tell you that feeling for the horse to chew the reins out of the hands is easy. As in all riding, it requires finesse, or what is termed equestrian tact. In the first part the horse rips the reins out the riders hands, a big no no. Then the horse does what we call backs off the bit, flexes at the poll and waits. I also heard this is called abstossen? (Hey, listen if it does not have a German name can it really be considered dressage? ) After the horse gives at the poll and waits maintaining a soft contact, then the rider opens her fingers and ALLOWS the horse to stretch. The difference it very obvious in this video. Here is a link to a Coventry newsletter that talks about abstossen ~ blythdale.tripod/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/Abstossen.pdf Asking the horse to chew the reins out of the hands at a halt, is rather easy doing it at the walk, trot and canter is a whole other matter.
