“ Chiangmai Zoo held a press conference – insisted panda Lin Hui’s tooth erosion unrelated to bamboo ” Karnchai Sanwong, veterinarian and director of Chiangmai Zoo, Nipon Vichairat, deputy director of Chiangmai Zoo, and Dr Boripat Siriaroonrat, head veterinarian held a joint press conference on Sept 18, 2014. Head veterinarian Dr. Boripat Siriaroonrat announced at the press conference that panda Lin Huis had dental problem since she was born and before she came to Thailand. Dr. Boripat adhered to his beliefs that her teeth erosion is not related to the hard bamboo she has been eaten for a decade. Message for Dr. Baripat Siriaroonrat: Dr. Baripat, you are full of bullshit! In fact, if you know 10 years ago her teeth isn’t healthy, not only you did not take steps to keep her teeth healthy and provide her with dental care, you skim by feeding her cheap giant bamboo as her main source of diet, you are a poor excuse for a man! Giant pandas use their teeth to chew and break apart bamboo, their teeth can get worn and damaged over time. By feeding her hard giant bamboo use as building material and scaffolding on construction site in Thailand, you speed up her enamel erosion. During the press conference, you told the media the pandas will receive physical health check-ups (including dental examination) in October or November this year. First of all, you don’t wait until the annual physical check-ups to conduct dental examination and to provide dental care. All pandas living in zoos outside of China are participated in regular training sessions with their keepers. Simple training includes train the pandas to open their mouths on command, a behavior that facilitate health monitoring by keepers. The vets can get valuable information about the pandas’ dental health. Dental maintenance is important for giant panda that can spend up to 10-14 hours a day eating bamboo. Recently, panda keepers at San Diego Zoo noticed their 23-year old Bai Yun’s lower tooth was broken. The next day, Bai Yun underwent a dental procedure to fix her chipped tooth. Bai Yun is 10 years older than Lin Hui, her teeth is in good condition. Other zoos take good care of their pandas, all you did is making excuses and blaming the panda. It is hard to believe when you said you have changed the bamboo diet for a year now by switching from one bamboo species to varieties of species. However, online photos and videos dated from Jan 2014 through Sept 2014, Lin Hui is clearly eating giant bamboo. The giant bamboo is a still staple diet for the giant pandas all seasons. The occasional photo and video of pandas eating bamboo harvesting in the Royal Project posted on Chiangmai Zoo (hereinafter referred to as CMZ) Facebook page, is just a publicity stunt to impress the media. We know why. Please see below for details. Dr. Baripat, may I remind you that you were very rude to fans that asked questions about Lin Hui’s teeth problem and her dental protection plan. You refused to give them a detailed plan for her dental care. You told people to come to the zoo to see the pandas for themselves. Look who’s talking? You don’t live in Chiang Mai area. You work and live in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand. You work with Thailand Zoological Park Organization. Your office is at Dusit Zoo (Bangkok). Your main role is wildlife reproductive science such as artificial insemination, vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer for zoos organized by Zoological Park Organization, including Dusit Zoo (Bangkok), Chiangmai Zoo (Chiangmai), Khao Kheow Open Zoo (Chon Buri), Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo (Nakhon Ratchasima), Songkhla Zoo (Songkhla). You travel to Chiangmai once a year to perform artificial insemination on Lin Hui. You were not at the zoo facility to observe the pandas’ behavior, nor were you there to watch what they eat every day. Two wrongs dont make a right, but they make a good excuse. List of lies after video of panda Lin Hui’s tooth erosion went viral: 1. CMZ concluded the cause of Lin Hui’s tooth erosion is heredity, unrelated to bamboo. 2. CMZ lied that giant bamboo is the preferred food for giant pandas. 3. CMZ claimed the difficulty of switching to another bamboo species with the changes of seasons (Note: CMZ had the pandas for 10 years, so the team had not figure this out yet?). There are pandas live on all continents, e.g. the United State, Japan, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Singapore and etc. This is just one of their many excuses. 4. CMZ vet Dr Gui told “Sing Siam Daily” reporter, panda Lin Hui has calcium deficiency when she was a young cub. 5. Dr Gui lied to reporter of “Sing Siam Daily” that she had not seen giant bamboo in the panda house, and that the zoo has never fed the pandas giant bamboo (see attached photos). 6. So many lies! Check out the CMZ panda keeper shows his daily routine behind the scene, preparing and cutting giant bamboo for the pandas. He called the bamboo “Pai Tong” in Thai, known as “Dendrocalamus Asper” aka Giant Tropical Bamboo. Here is the link to video on YouTube: youtu.be/mhB5SjLdDnk 7. In the press conference, the CMZ said the team received good advice from the China Wildlife Conservation Association concerning Lin Hui’s teeth issue. However, nothing has changed. Today, fans saw the keeper feeding panda Lin Hui hard giant bamboo (see attached photos). Corruption in the organization: The director of CMZ lied to Thai media that the pandas don’t eat giant bamboo, the pandas only want to eat bamboo growing in the Royal Project. Bamboo harvested by the Royal Project aren’t cheap. His lies worked. The CMZ receives $1 million Baht (approx. $31040.00 US Dollar) government grants per year for bamboo costs. However, zoo director only gave the Panda Project monthly bamboo budget of 6000 Baht (approx. $190.00 US Dollar). Keepers were told to buy cheap giant bamboo from the villagers. The amount of 6000 Baht is less than 10% of the grant. So, where does the remaining money go? The CMZ’s team is able to cover their tracks by inviting media to the zoo, display varieties of bamboo species and feed the pandas bamboo species harvested by the Royal Project. Thai media is satisfied. Once the zoo team managed to shake off media, they reverted back to feeding the pandas cheap giant bamboo. Message for the China Wildlife Conservation Association(CWCA), the China Conservation and Research Center for The Giant Panda (CCRCGP) and the State Forestry Administration of China (SFA): The CMZ’s team has proven to be irresponsible and untrustworthy. They say one thing and do another. They fabricate story, changing statement, distort the facts whenever it suits them. Panda fans and supporters around the world are watching to see what is your next step. 1. To see if your organization’s mission is truly to conserve and to protect the giant pandas. 2. To see if you would do the right thing, and return panda Lin Hui to China so she can get the care she deserves. 3. To see which sides are you on, the panda that needs your help or your paying customer? 4. To see when the lies were exposed, if your organization plans to take any action against the Chiangmai Zoo. 5. To see if your organization put profit over pandas by signing 10-year extension with Thailand. 6. Don’t forget this: panda Lin Hui has brought you millions of dollars for the past 10 years, she deserves to be well taken care of by you.
