Chicharron- is a side dish or appetizer made of fried pork rinds, but sometimes chicken or beef. It is also used as a topping or flavoring for many Filipino vegetable and noodle dishes. Popular in countries with Spanish influence like Latin America, parts of USA, and of course, the Philippines, where it is widely available and hugely popular. Due to its bad reputation for not being heart-healthy, Philippine exporters have gone to great lengths to make this delicacy healthier. Chicharron sold in Kabayan have to pass strict sodium and trans-fat content set by Health Canada. Now they are low in cholesterol, low in saturated fat, and with little salt added. It is an excellent source of protein. For every 1 oz. (approx. 10 pieces), you get between 12-17 g. of protein! They are also available in different flavours- garlic, chili, vinegar, and the ever-popular beer match variety.
