Chief’s Babble…..on friends stopping by. I was talking to - TopicsExpress

Chief’s Babble…..on friends stopping by. I was talking to some of the officers during shift change yesterday. One of the officers was discussing that some of our Facebook friends stopped by the department on Sunday. The family from out of county, admitted to following us on Facebook and wanted to visit the department and meet officers. The officers greeted them, gave them a tour and I believe they left with some parting gifts. Detective Lance added to the conversation by telling the officers he had personally given four separate tours of the department during yesterday’s dayshift. The conversation stuck in my head as I was giving a tour to a mom and her children this morning. The officers in the conversation were Gyoker, Gramlich, Lance and…I was sort of a facilitator…or instigator. (I was not an alligator). The idea came up to start a “wall of visitors.” The idea snowballed into the talking about the old Chi-Chi’s restaurant and the birthday celebration you could have there. The staff would place a big sombrero on your head and sing a lively song….The idea the officers tossed around was similar…..it involves having an eight-point hat (our standard hat, which the ladies LOVE) for our visiting friends to wear. The officer would then pose for a picture with the visitor and we could hang the pictures on the wall of the department. We also thought about having a guest registry in the front foyer. Ideas were flying all over the room. After that conversation…and this morning…. I thought of the fact that we were talking about doing this at a POLICE department. This is not a restaurant or store. Using logic, it should not be a place people want to visit, take pictures and hug the occupants….but then again, logic began to change when we started our Facebook page. I believe this is the new logic; the new way of thinking, at least for one small department in a small corner of the world. I also believe if what we do begins to catch on and other police departments begin a strong, constant and positive interaction with their own communities…things will change all over. We have to be a team (minus the mopes) in order to have any positive results. In cannot be a “them and us” attitude from either side of the badge. We strongly encourage our friends to stop by anytime they are in our area. No matter where you are from, stop in and see us…. Welcome to the Graceland of police work…. Cue up Burning Love and hand me my cape….Chief Oliver
