Children detained at Inverbrackie in outer Adelaide are allowed to - TopicsExpress

Children detained at Inverbrackie in outer Adelaide are allowed to go to local schools. It is parent / teacher interview time and so a bus (with guards) takes parents from the detention facility to the local school. One father finds it all overwhelming: upon meeting the teacher, he begins weeping. Acutely embarrassed, he explains through an interpreter that he is not sad. On the contrary: he is happy, so very delighted, that his young son can be at school. Every day, he says, he reminds his boy to work hard and “be good”, because he is so lucky to be at school at the moment. “Thank you! Thank you!” He says fervently. In some places education is a hard thing to get. This father sees a life-changing opportunity for his little boy at this lovely, suburban school. For almost 400 school aged children detained in Nauru and Christmas Island, there is no school to attend. There is no opportunity for their parents to be thankful for.
