Though Hyderabad is not new to complaints of foul smell and emissions, their number has gone up in the last month and the reason is lack of monitoring teams. The enforcement teams of PCB have been dissolved in order to introduce a rolling system that is yet to be staffed. This, meanwhile, is having an adverse impact on the health of children and the elderly. “Twice or thrice in a week, children at home have breathing issues,” says M. Lalita, an IT professional, adding “I am worried about the long-term effects of the odour on them”. The elderly are another group to be hit hard by the pollution. “We are unable to bear the odour anymore,” said a senior citizen in Kukatpally. “We personally met the senior officials about our woes. But nothing has happened so far. We are waiting for some action and results,” said a group of citizens in Miyapur. P. Veeranna, a scientific officer with the Telangana State PCB, said, “Yes, we did receive complaints of bad odour from residents in Kukatpally and other areas. The odour was mainly from the industrial areas. However, the problem no longer exists as our teams checked the industries that were releasing the gases without proper filtration or stack conditions.” --
