Children of the Day 1 Thess. 5:5 says that “. . .we are children - TopicsExpress

Children of the Day 1 Thess. 5:5 says that “. . .we are children of light. . .of the day: we are not of the night nor of darkness.” Every since God divided the light from the darkness, He has made a distinction between night and day; between light and darkness; that is, Spiritual darkness. So, if there is a spiritual darkness in the world, and we know that there is – then there must also be a Spiritual Light in the world. What is this Spiritual Light? In Psalm chapter 19, the psalmist speaks of the song of the spheres, or what I like to call – The Song Of Creation. And, in verses 4-6, he talks about the “sun.” Now, look at verse 6, “His (the sun) going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.” The rising of the sun according to verse 5 is a happy occation. We all have had those nights that we thought would never end. You know, those nights that seemed to go on and on forever, and when day break finally came you rejoiced to see it. Within the context of the rising of the sun, the metaphor of the morning – we now have the first seven words of, and this can’t be a coincidence, verse 7, “The law of the LORD is perfect,. . .” Just as God looked at all that he created at the end of his creating, and said – “it is VERY good” so is His law VERY good. In other words – it is PERFECT. You must pause here and understand that there has never been a weakness in God’s Law – the weakness has always been in man’s flesh. The problem has never been with God, it has always been with us. Mankind almost always chooses darkness rather than light. We like to do things in secret, in darkness. John clearly says, “walk in the light as he is in the light. . .” And then there is that verse from Proverbs that I love so much, which says, “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Proverbs 4:18 You should memorize that verse, and let it live with you for a while. Again, here we have the metaphor of the sun. Except in this verse from Proverbs, we have not only the rising of the sun, but we also have its lighting til noon day. Another translation says, “. . .is as the clear light, Shining more and more, to the noonday.” (ABPS). This reminds me of a verse from 2 Peter, “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star (the sun) arise in your hearts: . .” 2 Peter 1:19. The light that shines in a dark place is the candle that is lit in the corner of the room. It may represent the partial revelation that the saints and prophets of the Old Testament had in regard to the coming Messiah of the world. And, what Peter is referring to here is the “confirmed” word of Prophecy concerning the first coming of Christ. I remember when I had my Thompson Chain Refference Bible. Even though it’s been at least eighteen years since, I can still recall that in between the Testaments, there’s a chart of all the Old Testament Messianic prophecies, and to the right of those Old Testament prophecies were New Testament verses showing how and when those prophecies were fulfilled. On the left side of the page was the lit candle in the corner of that dark room; on the right side of that page was the day star i.e. the sun, arising, and to bring in another Old Testament verse revealing the metaphor of the sun – he will arise “with healing in his wings. . .” Malachi 4:2. Let’s return to Proverbs 4:18. Notice it begins with the conjunction “But.” We will need to see the verse before it in order to better grasp its meaning. “For they (wicked men) eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.” Proverbs 4:17 Have you ever noticed that the wicked and the sinful like to “play” mostly in the night hours? That’s because they are children of darkness, of the night. Also notice the reference to “sleeping” in verse 16. It says that they “sleep not” And that their “sleep is taken away.” They can’t sleep because of their evil imaginations working overtime in their sinful hearts. “. . .they sleep not, except they have done mischief” This word “mischief” means to be good for nothing, i.e. bad. We are not children of darkness, but rather, we are children of light. Reading the book of Proverbs will give you a good sense of the very opposite of of what it means to be a child of darkness, i.e. what it means to be children of the day.
