Children view the strength and longevity of their parents’ marital bonds as a direct indicator of personal security. Broken or unhealthy bonds may cause a child to believe that his family relationships are not permanent; a conclusion which can cause feelings of betrayal and deep emotional pain which may last a lifetime. He may begin to equate relationships with distress, and therefore fear new relationships. As a defense mechanism, he will withdraw his emotions from those he loves and then shut them down altogether. This sends a message of rejection to those closest to him leading to a cycle of conflict in his current relationships.
