Children who have been abandoned or displaced and abused are able to smile and experience the spirit of Christmas because of the selfless efforts of child care institutions such as St. Dominics Home and The Rainbow Rescue as well as those who volunteer and support them. Having suffered abuse and separation from their families these children only make it through the day through the guidance, counselling and homeliness which these centres provide . When it comes to Christmas, Judy Wilson, the founder of The Rainbow Rescue home for boys, describes the season as one of the busiest and most fun-filled times for the young boys at their home. One of the proudest moments, she said, was when they rehearsed and and performed with the Love Movement for their annual Christmas Concert, WIlson said. The Rainbow Rescue boys traditionally spend Christmas Day with their respective relatives, however, this year, they were specially invited to brunch and gift opening by the Gooding Family of the Rainbow Warriors Triathlon team, of which the boys are part. The children at St. Dominic’s Home create Christmas. They get into the spirit by putting up the Christmas tree and other decorations. The home, formerly known as Belmont orphanage was founded in 1817 and currently houses over 50 displaced boys and girls between the ages of 3-17 years . This year, for the first time in over 20 years the home reintroduced a Nativity Scene Play with the children as the cast. The play entitled Only Jesus knows- the first Noel was first performed by inmates back in in 1912 was staged earlier this month for two days. The children were decked out in costumes for the Trini style nativity, inclusive of a real baby for Baby Jesus, live animals and performances from Crazy and Myron B. We can only hope to plant the seed of greatness and grow them up to be best that they can be and hope to produce men of stature in Trinidad and Tobago. July Wilson told TTRN.
