Child’s Play Recently I find myself making my way to bed before my granddaughter, where she follows me, climbs up and bothers me. Kids have an instinct as to where to step, knee or poke an elbow as to cause you considerable discomfort in the cutest way. My granddaughter, who is no exception to this, also plays with the airstream coming from my CPAP and has learned how to plug it up. So as a diversion and to tire her out, and by her I mean us, we play a game we call trap. It’s a simple bear hug she has to wiggle out of, with variations. There is the regular trap; she has to figure out which way to slip out. The pillow trap, I bear hug her with a pillow, she easily slips out and pretending to think I still I have her and feel around with my eyes close as she delightfully giggles about her escape (this is her favorite). She traps me by laying accost my chest, declares me trapped, and rides side to side as I pretend in vain to try to break free. The up side down trap, the hardest of all, where she is dangled over the edge of the bed and has to do a power sit-up to get out (wish I could still do that one). The love hug is a variation I use when one of us is too rambunctious (and by us I meaning her) and we need a break (and by we I mean me). This takes a minute to figure out, because a love hug is physically impossible to break free of, but after discovering it’s a love hug you are simply let go after saying “I love you”. The point is she learned to ask what kind of trap she’s in, in order to more efficiently plan her escape. She now knows that pulling the thumb, when in a hand hold, it is easier then struggling to get four fingers off. All traps and hold are adjust on the fly as to be safe and increase her ability to figure things out without going into panic mode, let’s see and interactive video game do that. She get a physical work out, so do I, learns to ask question, think threw a problem under “pressure”, and that by persistent working she gets free, wins, or is otherwise is happy with the outcome. Now I tell myself this is all good for her development, but nah, it’s just child’s play. This has been another insomniac moment brought to you by me a person that can’t sleep. Series # 000000000002 or was it 3
