Chills! On Sunday evening, October 20, 2013, the Performing Animal Welfare Society welcomed three female African elephants from the Toronto Zoo in Ontario, Canada: Toka, age 43, Thika, age 33, and Iringa, age 44. Their trip was funded by Award-winning television host, Bob Barker, who ardently advocated for the move. The elephants eventually will share an 80-acre natural habitat with the sanctuarys three resident African elephants, Mara, Maggie and Lulu, at PAWS ARK 2000 sanctuary in Northern California. Toka was the first of the three Toronto elephants to be unloaded (see video Arrival Day, Part 1); she was also the first one that PAWS resident elephants, Mara, Maggie and Lulu, would see. A joyous elephant greeting erupted from PAWS elephants, as Toka walked into the African elephant barn for the first time. Elephants have an amazing range of vocalizations, from a deep throaty bellow to a high pitched trumpet. When Mara, Maggie and Lulu saw their new friend Toka for the first time, the barn erupted with a loud chorus! These earth-shaking sounds communicated recognition that a new elephant had arrived, and conveyed a wonderful greeting to her. Thika and Iringa were greeted the same way as they took their turns entering the barn. The spectacular elephant sounds coming from the barn on Sunday night were sounds most people will never have the chance to hear in their lifetime. Once all three new elephants were in the barn, the rest of the night was quiet. Enjoy!
