Chimodzi upbeat of Flames victory against Algeria Malawi National Team Coach Young Chimodzi is optimistic about his team’s success against Algeria on Saturday in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers encounter at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. This will be the second game since the 2010 Afcon, when the Flames beat Algeria 3-1 in Angola. In an interview with the Malawi News Agency on Wednesday at the teams training base, Chimodzi said his boys were up to the task. “We have to play our normal game against Algeria, both sides have contrasting styles but on the day it’s the team that will impose itself on the other that will win the match. We need to face this game with renewed confidence, we have to give our best and hope for a good start with a victory,” said Chimodzi. Chimodzi, flanked by inspirational captain Joseph Kamwendo and midfielder Robert Ng’ambi, said all was set for his charges to scorch Algeria. Captain Kamwendo said the spirits were high in camp. “It’s really nice to be back home, and even better to be playing this match here in my hometown. I hope to get a chance on Saturday to also show what I can do in front of my home fans,” said Kamwendo, who plies his trade with TP Mazembe in DRC. The Flames have won once of the last two matches in their group having lost to Mali before clipping Ethiopia 3-2 at Kamuzu Stadium, but Kamwendo said fovus was now on the Saturdays encounter. “There is new a spirit in the camp and that spirit is high, we are ready to put our bodies on the line – it’s not going to be easy playing against the number one in Africa who also qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and have been doing well in their recent matches. But what happened in the past is behind us, we have to focus on the future and be ready for this game,” said Kamwendo. Kamwendo also stressed that beating Algeria would lift the confidence in the camp. “It will be a big plus if we can beat Algeria who have shown professionalism by coming here early to get a feel of the weather condition and the like. But the first hurdle for us is to bring back self belief; and to do that we need to start beating the number one team in Africa and building up a winning mentality starting with them,” said Kamwendo.
