Chin up. Chest out. When confronting the world, lean forward. My nephew was throwing a tantrum one day when the rest of the family wanted to go to celebrate dinner. The tantrum was loud and of course an effort for the two year old to have control over his immediate world. I went over to pick him up and he haruumped a loud exhale between cries and whines and crossed his arms and even appeared to glue his seat to the floor. His massive weight was heavy and it hurt my back trying to pick him up as he solidified himself there on the floor. A few seconds later my sister (who he very much liked) arrived with a set of toy keys dangling on a big yellow key ring. But she was just passing both of us on her way to the front door. Not missing the passing toy, my nephew suddenly wanted to be lifted up and carried to my sister. Now this changed everything. My nephew was suddenly lighter and effervescent. As he knew he was going to now get to go to my sister and his new toy keys, he got giggly and even lighter yet when he opened his hands to indicate getting the keys in them. Picking him up was like picking up bubbles. He clung to me even before we touched and the hold that the floor once had on his pull-ups had suddenly evaporated. It was as if he was magnetized away from the floor and toward the front door where my sister was waiting. Years later when I was teaching a friend how to roll his kayak, I explained to him this principle of personal inertia. Being positive, being grateful, being appreciative, being forward thinking and making sure your posture in these situations is a posture of forward movement and you are goal oriented and positive thinking. Your physical posture will not only propel you forward but will also keep you balanced as you move forward. The achievement of this balance will provide you with greater self confidence which also adds to your forward motion.
