China and UK trade at record high The UKs open approach to foreign investment makes it a natural destination for Chinese firms investing overseas. Chinas money will be especially welcome in the field of infrastructure, although perhaps less so in the London house market, which has never been short of investors. The trade picture is much less impressive. So long as both the UK and Chinese economies are expanding one would expect bilateral trade to rise to new heights each year. Despite all of the UK governments efforts, UK goods exports to China remain anaemic, and China enjoyed a vast trade surplus of US$31.9bn with the UK in 2013. Meanwhile, in order to push the trade relationship, the UK has been forced to downplay its concerns about human rights in China. It has been an expensive trade-off.
