China plans 3 dams on Brahmaputra Spl Correspondent NEW DELHI, July 9 – The NDA Government has confirmed that China has indicated that it proposes to build three hydropower projects on the mainstream of the Brahmaputra river in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). In a Lok Sabha reply to a question, Minister of State for External Affairs General (retd) VK Singh said the óutline of the 12th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China indicates that three hydropower projects on the mainstream of the Brahmaputra in TAR have been approved for implementation by the Chinese authorities. A hydropower project at Zangmu is already under construction, he added. During the recent visit of Vice President Hamid Ansari to China, the two governments signed an implementation plan on provision of pydrological information on the Brahmaputra river in flood seasons by China and India. The Government of India carefully monitors all developments on the Brahmaputra. As a lower riparian state with considerable established user rights to the waters of the river, India has conveyed its views and concerns to China, the Minister claimed. India has urged China to ensure that the interests of downstream states are not harmed by any activities in upstream areas, said Singh.
