China: senior economic official jailed for life over graft Liu Tienan, a former senior economic #official, has been sentenced to life in prison by a Hebei court for #bribery and abuse of power. The Intermediate People’s Court in Langfang city ruled on Wednesday morning that Liu, a former deputy chief of the National Development and Reform Commission, was guilty of receiving more than 35 million yuan (US$5.8 million) in bribes from four companies, including petrochemical producers and carmakers, from 2002 to 2012. Liu’s #trial closed in September, but it took until Wednesday for the court to deliver its verdict. The former official pleaded guilty and expressed remorse during the trial. According to a court paper released in September, Liu Tienan broke down in tears and kept asking “How did I end up like this?” The court script also highlighted that more than 90% of the money Liu took was through his son. In addition to the life sentence, he lost his political rights for life, and personal property, and wealth. The allegation against Liu was first brought up by Luo Changping, a Chinese journalist who was then the deputy editor-in-chief of Caijing magazine, on his Sina Weibo account in December 2012. The CPC’s discipline watchdog announced in May of last year that the economic official was expelled from the Party and suspended from his position for serious disciplinary violations. He was the first ministerial-level official to be removed from the Party and government office after President Xi Jinping launched the anti-graft campaign in late 2012.
