Chinas Three Gorges dam has broken the world record for hydroelectric power production per year, its operator says. In a statement on Thursday, the Three Gorges Dam Corporation said the dam, which spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in Yiling District, Hubei Province, generated 98.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity in 2014. The Yangtze River power station wrested the production record from the hydroelectric Itaipu Dam, which is on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. Brazils dam generated 98.6 billion kwh of electricity in 2013. The Three Gorges plant generates an amount of electricity that is approximately equivalent to burning 49 million tons of coal. The plant therefore prevents 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
