Chinese lanterns have been popping up all over city streets both - TopicsExpress

Chinese lanterns have been popping up all over city streets both in the UK and all over Asia in preparation for the start of Chinese New Year celebrations. Residents of Asian countries such as China, Korea and Vietnam will enjoy a public holiday of up to seven days, whilst expats will also take part in large public events. Known as Spring Festival to those who partake in it, it is based on a centuries old legend about an evil mythical monster who preyed on villagers. A wise man is said to have counselled villagers to ward off the monster by making loud noises with drums and firecrackers and hanging red paper on doors. It is also thought to have traditionally marked the start of preparations for a new growing season.
