Chinese president’s visit postponed due to protests: FO * Chinese Foreign Ministry says visit postponed in light of anti-government protests in Islamabad staff report/reuters September 07, 2014 Be First To Comment Tweet ISLAMABAD/SHANGHAI: The Foreign Office on Saturday said Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit has been postponed through a mutual agreement due to the anti-government protests. “New dates for the president’s visit to Pakistan, at an early date, are being discussed through diplomatic channels,” the Foreign Office said through a statement. The FO spokeswoman said that China and Pakistan were friendly neighbours and had maintained close high-level exchanges but “it is worth pointing out that we have never released any information about President Xi’s visit to Pakistan officially”. “There is no basis to say we are about to cancel anything,” the press release said. Both countries underline that China and Pakistan are time-tested all-weather friends. Both sides attach high importance to the visit, as early as possible, for promoting mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. Separately, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said China and Pakistan have postponed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Pakistan in light of anti-government protests in Islamabad. “Given the current political situation in Pakistan, the Chinese government and the government of Pakistan agreed to delay for a time the state visit of President Xi Jinping to Pakistan planned for later this month,” it said in a statement posted on its website. Beijing and Islamabad were working through diplomatic channels to find a new date for Xi to visit as early as possible, it said.
