Chiropractic History No. 1. D.D. Palmer (the founder of Chiropractic) was born in Canada 1845. His family migrated to America and D.D. and his brother T.J. followed five years later reuniting in Iowa in 1865. D.D. and T.J. taught school and ventured into the bee farming business as the Palmer Bros in New Boston, Illinois. D.D. became one of Americas most successful bee farmers (honey producers) 1869-1882. However, much like today bees began to vanish and die of disease. DD theorized it was from the harsh winters and cool summers. He sold his Sweet Home farm and moved his family to What Cheer, Iowa to reunite once again with the rest of the Palmers. There he opened a grocery store and specialized in household items and fresh fish. He dubbed himself Fish Palmer. His brother T.J. owned the citys conservative newspaper and was bitter enemies with the editor of the democratic paper. Heated battles over prohibition in Iowa and politics were the daily topics in the papers. Conditions got hot, perhaps too hot for some of the Palmers to remain in What Cheer. T.J. and D.D. both relocated in 1886. D.D. became a magnetic healer and opened a practice in Burlington Iowa. It is unknown how or where he learned magnetic healing, though he wrote he was aware of his healing abilities as far back as 1871 (he was married to a clairvoyant and healer.) In 1888 DD moved to Davenport Iowa and rented a room in the Ryan Block Building. He opened a magnetic healing practice there and soon occupied the entire top floor of the massive building. His practice was very successful, though later he over extended his credit in his collection of wild game trophies. During 1886-1895 DD searched for the cause of dis-ease and studied the balance of heat and the life force in the human body. He wrote copious notes which BJ as a boy collected from the waste paper basket. Along with DDs journals and the collected notes these papers would fill 70 bound volumes. DD and BJ both claimed that on September 18, 1895 the first Chiropractic adjustment was delivered to a man named Harvey Lillard. Although Chiropractic was born on this date its development started as early as 1886 when DD Palmer studied the condition of dis-ease (lack of ease, not at ease) and the methods to restore balance.
