Chiropractic: Is Low Back Pain in Your Genes? A team of researchers from the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College London have identified a gene linked to lumbar disk degeneration, a common age-related problem associated with low back pain. Disk degeneration develops when the disk becomes dehydrated, loses height, and the vertebrae on either side develop bony growths called osteophytes, which can cause or exacerbate lower back pain. Using meta-analysis techniques, the researchers compared the MRI findings with genome data and found a strong link between a variant of the PARK2 gene and the presence of degenerative disks.
