Chocolate Break-Up: In a dream last night I was working in a 1950s office in a tall building when the mail was delivered. Looking through it, I found a package about a half-inch thick with irregular shape, wrapped in silvery paper. It had no address on it and there were vaguely ominous graffiti-like phrases written on it. I handed it to the secretary and said it looked like chocolate break-up. Her eyes widened. She opened the window and threw it out; then came the explosion. What is chocolate break-up, and why does it exist? I used to buy it at the five-and-ten in Bristol, Rhode Island. It was sold from the glass cabinet where the fancier, carefully-shaped chocolates were sold, but it looked like someone had just taken a hammer to a large half-inch-thick piece of chocolate. In those days, did they just cast chocolate in half-inch-thick ingots and throw them in boxcars to make their way across the country? Did some of the ingots always break, so they had to sell them cheaper? Oh to be the hobo in THAT boxcar!
