Chocolate originated in the Pre-Columbian era, in the regions of South America & Mexico. Chocolate was a popular drink of the native Americans and at one point in history it was also considered as an elite drink consumed by royalty and offered to the Gods in ritual ceremonies. Chocolate is made from the cacao tree via a process of fermentation, drying and roasting. Sugar was introduced by the Spanish during their conquests of the native american civilizations in the Americas. The main component of chocolate is Theobromine which literally means "food of the gods". Due to the presence of cacao in chocolate, consuming chocolates, especially dark chocolates (that have more cacao in them), has tremendous positive health benefits. Chocolate also has anti-oxidants. Chocolates, rich in cacao, have many health benefits such as lowering high blood pressure, improving brain function, prevention of cancer and heart disease.
