Choice. The greatest gift addicted minds can receive. In the midst of addiction I received a moment of clarity where I was given a freebie choice. For a minute I actually saw a glimpse of how my life really was. Where my choices had brought me to that point. How I was affecting my family. My kids. Myself. And I set off onto another path. I had to come to terms with the fact that my life had gotten to that point of despair because I had always selfishly chose to alter myself so I would feel better. Or rather not feel at all. When the fog lifted, I got a huge dose of reality, and things were much worse than I thought. Instead of running, escaping myself through a chemical solution, I started doing everything different. I got through death, divorce, job loss, family illness, homelessness, and so on. Only to stick around long enough to see the other side of those bad choices I decided to face. The results are astonishing. That all turned around, and I received a beautiful healthy life. But the gift I wasnt expecting was the best gift of all. Watching and helping others succeed. Building real relationships with family, children, friends, sponsors and sponsees. Having the hand reach out to me, and being able to reach out to pull a brother from the hell of addiction to start their journey to recovery. Thats a choice Ill never regret! It aint easy.
