Choices in Childbirth released a new report today examining the impact of doula care in New York City and what needs to be done to expand access to this valuable service. Their new report brings together the medical evidence with the voices of women and doulas across the city to show how doula care supports the “triple aim” of the Affordable Care Act by: • improving health outcomes • enhancing women’s experience of care • reducing spending on unnecessary and unwanted medical interventions Doula care can help women have safer, healthier, and more satisfying births, and can help reduce health disparities. Increasingly, doula support is being recognized as one of “the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes.” Yet, they found that only 5% of women in New York City have doulas at their births, and only 450 women in underserved NY communities have access to doulas through community-based or volunteer programs each year.
