Choral Evensong Trinity XV 28 September 2014 - DYSON ANNIVERSARY - at St Cyprian’s Cathedral. This evening Kimberley Cathedral was privileged to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Sir George Dyson KCVO with the singing of his gem of a setting, the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F. Dyson died in Winchester on this day, 28 September, in 1964. He was born on 28 May 1883 in Halifax, Yorkshire. Of humble working class background, he played the organ from the age of 13, a few years later winning a Mendelssohn Scholarship to study abroad. He taught at Rugby, Wellington and Winchester, as well as the Royal College of Music, of which he was later Director. His works include orchestral compositions and a violin concerto, large-scale choral works, and much liturgical music for the Anglican Church. He was awarded a knighthood in 1941, made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1953. One biographical note observes of Dyson that he was “a passionate believer in the notion that music had to move forward,” and that “he felt that the Brahms-influenced music of Sir Edward Elgar, the folk song-inspired works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the Celtic romanticism of Sir Arnold Bax were all remnants of an era that had passed.” “Modern yet tonal and melodic” is a summing up of his subsequent distinctive style, reminiscent of Sibelius. Upon his appointment as Director of the RCM in 1938, he redesigned the curriculum and created a Contemporary Music Society. ichef.bbci.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/images/paintings/rcmu/624x544/wmrii_rcmu_pphc000024_624x544.jpg
