Chris, Ann, and I were there with Damascus, MD High School band - TopicsExpress

Chris, Ann, and I were there with Damascus, MD High School band for Operation Friendly Invasion, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the D Day Invasion. It was a wonderful experience to hear our President and (to lesser degree) President Mitterrand of France. We met many of our veterans and some of the French resistance fighters. Ann talked to some Catholic nuns who suffered during he German occupation. They said that the Nazis took all the food and that they, the nuns, were reduced to eating tulip bulbs. They said that the young people at the time (1984) resented America, but they in 1944 were overjoyed to be liberated by the Americans. They had a great appreciation for America and Americans! A little side note: Chris had injured a rib on the trip, and the pain was affecting the playing of his trombone. There was a US Army Mash unit on the beach there in Normandy to provide emergency medical services for anyone with a need. Chris availed himself of their services. Just as with the TV Mash series he was seen and mended by a Col. Potter. I took a nice picture of Chris being served by Col. Potter with his name tag clearly displayed. The doctor did not look at all like the TV Potter.
