Chris Barbic, head of the Achievement School District, plans to take over one of our Nashville schools and turn it into a charter school. Although the ASD was originally conceived as something very different, it has become a way for state officials to hand over public schools to their charter school pals, who stand to gain financially from these deals. The way to minimize community and parent input, while bypassing the democratic process, is to schedule meetings about the charter school takeover that no one can attend. Barbic used this tactic in Memphis and is now trying to use the same tactic here. He has scheduled two meetings this coming week at two different schools at the exact same time- December 4th at 4:30 pm. Jill Speering, who represents both schools, asked Barbic to reschedule the meetings so that she and other elected officials could attend both. Comically, Barbic claimed (among other things) that he just could not afford more than one nights stay at a hotel for his staff, who are traveling here from Memphis- even though last year, he used tax dollars to host happy hours for his teachers and has never come clean about ASD spending. If we are to accept this reasoning, I wonder why he had to schedule all the Memphis ASD takeover meetings at the same time. The most outrageous part of this, however, is the fact that the two Nashville schools now on the chopping block both outperform the ASD! And the ASD underperforms the Memphis public schools that it is attempting to convert to charters. If this doesnt confirm to you that none of this is about the best interests of children, I dont know what will. Please read Jills post in the first comment below. Barbic is a parent himself and knows full well how busy parents are this time of year. I will have to miss my daughters ballet dress rehearsal Thursday, but I am going to try my hardest to be there. The ASD is counting on our absence. Please come.
