Chris Dovi is opening a school at the end of July on Broad ST and 3rd in Richmond. He needs some help: So, I need help. Volunteers with a bit of carpentry ability to help to (quickly) renovate and prepare a nonprofit storefront downtown to make it amazing. We are launching CodeVAs classroom space and storefront at 300 E. Broad St. on July 21. I plan, hell or high water, to make it a great place for kids. CodeVA, if anyone cares, is maybe the most important work Ive ever done. We are training public school teachers from Richmond and across the state to teach something that today is nearly nonexistent in our schools. Partnered with Code.org, CodeVA will nearly double the number of computer science teachers in Virginia by this fall. Computer science is 21st century literacy. It IS nearly 70 percent of STEM-field jobs. Without it, a biology major is a barista. With it, our country competes again and wins as the worlds innovation leader. Please contact me if youre interested in helping out. Or if your kid needs a summer camp opportunity that will rock, but that also will set them on the road to an amazing future. And speaking of amazing, come meet my wife, Rebecca Carson Dovi, a 17-year veteran computer science teacher, and Maggie Smith, our arts program manager. If I sound pie-eyed and enthusiastic, I am. This is important. But damn I could use a few folks with hammers.
