Chris von der Ahe (1851-1913) owned the St. Louis Brown Stockings - TopicsExpress

Chris von der Ahe (1851-1913) owned the St. Louis Brown Stockings baseball team (now known as the Cardinals) from 1882 to 1898. He was a charismatic and flamboyant owner, and proudly placed a 25-foot-tall statue of himself outside Sportsman’s Park. The statue was widely ridiculed, and was dubbed “von der Ahe discovers Illinois” by a Denver writer. After von der Ahe’s death the statue was placed atop a large pedestal on his gravesite in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
