Christ is the means and the way. We can see the amount of material concerning truth and falsehood in John’s gospel. When we analyse John, he is concerned with this battle of truth and lies and the position Christ plays in that struggle. John 14:6-7 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him." (RSV) So the concept is that through the Spirit they had seen Christ operate. They had seen the Holy Spirit in Christ; therefore they had seen the Father. We have the Holy Spirit and, in the same way, people see us and they see the Father. Very often people hate us without cause as they hated Christ without cause. When they see the Father in us through the Holy Spirit, they don’t automatically say, “Aren’t they nice people!” For some reason they can develop quite a pathological hatred against us for no cause.
