Christian Character trait #7 -PERSEVERANCE. Have you ever had one of those days where you were just ready to give up? Where you just wanted to throw in the towel? Not doing that is what perseverance is all about. I like to think of perseverance as stick-to-itiveness. Perseverance is simply defined as sticking with a tough task until it is finished. The greatest enemy of perseverance? You guessed it, laziness. No other person can make you have perseverance. It is something that you have to want and ask God’s help for. Wow, this one is just as tough as last week’s trait of patience. It is a close relative of patience and you need patience first before you can master perseverance. Perseverance, like patience, is strengthened when we rely on God. In Psalm 27 God promises us protection, in Psalm 18, He promises us strength, in Psalm 103 forgiveness is the promise, in Psalm 119 we find the promise of guidance, in Psalm 46 God promises us safety and Psalm 139 offers us the promise of His presence. These are just a few of the promises from God. When you let your mind comprehend and accept the promises of God, it will make it a little easier to persevere. Are you a persevere-er? What is your level of stick-to-itiveness? The 23rd Psalm can easily be your theme for perseverance. Read it as follows, but insert your name in the blanks: The Lord is ________’s shepherd, _________ shall not want. He maketh ________ to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth ________ beside the still waters. He restoreth _______‘s soul; he leadeth _______ in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though _________ walks through the valley of the shadow of death, ________ will fear no evil: for thou art with _________; thy rod and thy staff they comfort _________. Thou prepares a table before ________ in the presence of __________’s enemies: thou anointest __________’s head with oil; ________’s cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow ________ all the days of _________’s life: and _________ will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Reading Psalm 23 in this personalized way will bring new joy and comfort to your soul. Be sure to share reading the Psalm in this manner with others. It will be a blessing! I pray that you will develop and nurture the character trait of perseverance in your life. Being able to persist in spite of obstacles will allow you to see any task to completion. One thought to ponder regarding perseverance. What would the world be like if everyone decided not to follow through with their responsibilities? You do need support too. You need the support of your family, friends, and most importantly, God’s Holy Spirit.
