Christianity is cultic. It is, at base, the worship of Jesus Christ-that is, the declaration, or performance, of his divinity. This is a special form of linguistic practice that is at odds with normal discourse. Good theology defends this otherness; bad theology neglects it, implicitly denies it. Liberal Protestantism lost sight of the priority of faith and cult, which must be affirmed together, because it wanted to rethink Christian truth and non-cultic terms. It developed a discourse relating Jesus to morality, history, philosophy, and so forth, and it treated this as the main event, implying that worship-speech can be largely left behind. ~Theo Hobson in Reinventing Liberal Christianity.
