Christianity, is more than religion or even a relationship, it’s a romance. Relationships vary in depth and length; however, a romance is a sustained relationship where a man pursues a woman with intent to woo her and gain her affection. If you think about it, we don’t really start off by pursuing God. He is pursuing us, but we may or may not even realize He exists. When we first hear about how He loves us, our response is much like a girl finding out a guy she didn’t even realize existed has feelings for her. “That’s kind of creepy. I don’t even know him. We’ve never hung out before we don’t even have the same friends. How much did you say he knows about me?” And slowly, as the guy continues to pursue the girl, invest into her, open up to her, and listen to her talk about whatever, she slowly begins to notice him more and more; and, even possibly, by chance, maybe a tiny little bit have some kind of feelings for him. There is a reason the church is called the bride of Christ and not just the friend of Christ. God’s expectation of the church is not to pursue Him, it’s to allow itself to be pursued. In a relationship there are two people pouring into each other to keep the relationship running and moving forward. In a romance, it’s a man, pouring into a woman, and her responding to his love. I’m afraid I don’t have much to bring to the table if I’m just a friend of Jesus. In reality, all I can do is respond to Jesus love for me, and that’s all He expects me to do.
