Christmas 1975, my youngest brother Stephen was invited by his best friend Deon Bassons parents, to spend a few days with them at the Vaal Dam. I remember my Mom being very hesitant in letting Fes (Stephens nickname) go. She finally agreed. A storm came up while they were sailing on the dam and Deon was washed overboard. Fes held on and called to Deon to swim to the shore (200 metres if I remember correctly), but the waves were to high and the water to rough. Deon drowned that day. His parents returned my brother safely but very sadly lost their son. Fes was fourteen and I was seven. Don Junior was a hit at that time and will forever remind me of Deon (the boy with the putty-nose).
