It began life centuries ago as a Celtic mush called frumentry and consisted of hulled wheat boiled in milk, with additional spices and sugar. Then in the 1670s the purpose was made much thicker and it became the famous pudding we know today The story behind it is this The Celts had a harvest god called Dagda whose eternal task was to sit a huge cauldron. In the cauldron was a porridge made up of all the good things of the earth. As long as he kept during, the harvest would be successful. Anyone wanting to enlist the Dagdas help in ensuring a good harvest should make sure to follow certain rituals. Before it is cooked, the Christmas pudding must be stored by each member of the family. This demonstrates that that have all honoured the god by imitating his actions.
