Christmas Hymn What is the message of Christmas? The gospel. What is the gospel? To love your neighbor as yourself. That’s how peace is created and that’s the essence of ethics: to help your neighbor and not to hurt him. The act of helping someone automatically precludes hurting him or her. If you take the word love, which is rather vague, and make it into a substantial action then that action is always going to be a form of helping. So to love actively means to help. All that is valuable in religious teaching can be summed up in a single four-letter word: HELP. When somebody shouts “Help!” they are saying “I need your love in concrete form, right now.” If you can remember the word help then you never have to read the Bible or go to church. If help is too much for you, you can try AID instead. That only has three letters! So, if you remember this one hymn, which encapsulates the eternal primal cry of all humanity, you should do all right:
