Christmas List of what to remember so far about 2014 1. Didn’t - TopicsExpress

Christmas List of what to remember so far about 2014 1. Didn’t get the whole house dusted before company arrived—didn’t matter. 2. Didn’t get the hardwood floors waxed before company arrived—didn’t matter 3. Had pears, grapes, apples and bananas on hand for the children and the eight-year old asked for watermelon—didn’t matter; he ate pears and grapes and Christmas was not ruined. 4. Had the perfect meal last night: my niece oversaw the cooking of the roast—carrots rolled wildly before they were washed and cooked; didn’t have the right pan so improvisation with lots of laughing ensued; the meat was a little too pink for us so we sliced and pan-fried it after baking while sipping just a bit more wine—hands down, the best meal ever cooked in my kitchen with the most laughs (Note to self: perfection is highly overrated, really) 5. About that perfect meal: needed olive oil which was provided last year by Marjorie Callandar and resulted in the best roasted vegetables ever served in my house (remember to thank Marjorie again!) 6. The almost three-year old Roxanne was coy with her Aunt Patty, resisting the giving of love with my sister who was playing all the aunt cards to woo Roxanne into her arms. Didn’t happen last night. As my sister was driving away, Rox was seated on my hip and we waved and she called out in an echo that my sister couldn’t hear, “I love you so much!” I heard it—told my sister. 7. Speaking of the giving of love….Rox held out on me for a while and while she was in another aunt’s arms, her brother, the eight-year old came over and put his arm around my shoulders and promised: “I will give you love.” 8. Saw my beautiful Aunt Judy a couple of days ago; she had crocheted slippers for her nieces and I gave Lola her pair and she put them on immediately and said, “They fit my feet!” How did Aunt Judy pull that one off? Really? 9. Saw my sweet cousin Kevin who is doing fine and he and I had an impromptu lunch together….we talked and laughed and talked and laughed—the tenor of this Christmas so far. 10. So glad I didn’t spend $249 dollars on a deluxe carousel music box because the children have enjoyed the clearance tree that cost $9 and was decorated with squeeze toys from Walgreen’s (also on clearance for under a buck each)—it’s toppled over 3 times so far and has been righted but increasingly stripped of all the non-breakable toys bought just for the occasion of children’s hands reaching for Christmas 11. Going out for frozen pizzas later to put in my freezer for some meal at night when none of us wants to cook….because frozen pizzas are just right sometimes, even during this season of turkeys and hams 12. Three of my friends have lost family members this very week. I started my morning praying for those families and vowing to remember that we have what counts, this moment, this Christmas season with as many of us who can be here are here. And all the people I’m missing are really here because I remember all of them…. The Christmas list of what to remember continues…so far, the best Christmas of my memory
