Christmas Reflections Everyboddday! This is cassava time! Cayon people - is cassava time!! Time for wuk! When you see de 1st of December come see for me Bertha Azarine Amabella Riley and all the other people dem in the Texas Village, Cayon it was the signal to get into the real business. It was cassava time. That mean that it was time to dig it, heap it, wash it, scrape it, grate it, wring it, dry it, sift it, bake it, flip and finally eat it - the dry ones for the pickney and dem and the ones with coconut and sugar in the middle for the Mr and Mrs Dem who live up on the project or any visitor who come by your house during Christmas. You see how them darn young people nowadays so lazy it is because they dont have no cassava days because cassava was nothing but work. Like today now we go down in the garden and we to dig and heap up and them later in the day you start to wash - bag after bag of cassava. You mother or whoever strong would empty the bags into the copper or the big bath pan and all the little pickney dem would start to wash to get rid of the dirt. Then we had to scrape them now. That was another set of wuk. You see this this cut here on my finger is one of the de knife them did cut there and I have the mark to take me to me grave. The grating was the worse part I believe. Lawd have mercy on my finger dem and that grater that Mr Surgeon make. (to be contd)
