Christmas Remembered 1967------- I still can see clearly those grey nights with the snowflakes falling on my hands, The very distinct and individual patterns the snowflakes made, How very beautiful each was as i watched them melt away before my eyes, and i remember looking up at the sky and wondering how something so Beautiful was made? in those very young years i loved to bundle up with my warm London fog and my Fav Cashmere scarf a luxury i had bought while working picking Tabacco in the summer that year. i loved to be outdoors in the woods in the winter, it was Magical to me, it was my world and i always love Nature. i even remember my thoughts back then, How i felt about life my hopes and my Dreams. I never expected to live this long, even now i am surprised that i still feel young. I remember at night still hearing my neighborhood kids sliding down the water tower hill some on sleds, some on garbage can lids, some on sleds or those old aluminum Saucers, and i remember using a flattened cardboard box and sliding down hill on that I have so many memories? some Happy, some Sad, All part of living life i guess? I shoveled enough Snow to last a lifetime and prayed for more averaging 300.00 a Winter shoveling snow by hand. Not bad for a 12, 13, or 14 year old i think Right? Then i would go hunting in the woods for Princess Pine, it grew on a vine under the snow, i would pick Huge bags of it and make Christmas Wreaths to sell. i had year to year standing orders all through the Neighborhood, even my Aunt Annette would buy one from me and my Grandmother Always a standing Order, First i would round out a wire coat hanger keeping the hook, Then i would tie a strong string to the hook leaving it about six feet long, Then take a bunch of Princess Pine and with stems downward hold close to the wire hanger, wrapping the string around the wire and stems, hiding the string in the greenery and then add the next bunch of pine and so on and so on.All around the rounded out hanger, Then a few snips with the scissors hear and there, and then frost with spray snow a Christmas pick or two in the center and a real nice Bow, That was important in those days for having enough money to buy Christmas presents, And i bought for everyone each year. My Mother first taught me to make these Wreaths, i remember i sold them for 7.50 a piece 80.00 or 90.00 Dollars total each Holiday Season. Ever Wonder what happened to all those 78 Records from back in the day?? Well we would put a Record on top of a empty 1 lb coffee can in the oven set at 250 The Record would melt making a perfectly fluted Basket Shape over the can, Take it out let it cool and paint it Gold or Silver and make a Christmas Centerpiece filled with pine cones, Glitter and sprigs of pine, Very popular back in those days, I did it All. Oh gosh we were poor But out of that poverty for me Became a necessity to learn to be creative and thus my profession Today as a Furniture Upholsterer I remember one very Bad Snow Storm in 1976 I appeared at work But know one was there? i called my Boss Peter and said? Where is everyone? He said? How the hell did you get there? I said i flattened out a cardboard box and Slid down the hill He was just shaking his head LOL But Hey i needed to work to pay my bills Right? So as i remember those days from long, long ago I now think to myself? How lucky i am to still be here, Happy Holidays Everyone
