Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the birth of The King. However, with two holidays centered upon the birth and death of Jesus, it becomes dangerously easy to approach His coming as centered upon ourselves. We have this mentality that He only came to die, which means we are only focused on the aspect of His time on Earth that we gain to benefit from the most. What happened between His birth and death cannot be ignored if we are to accept the gift that His death and resurrection offers to us. We must place as much of our attention to His teaching and example while He lived if we are to ever understand what truly lies in the receiving of His salvation. If we ignore this, we are bound to repeat the failures of the Israelites that Jesus very clearly walks us through as He reveals what it takes to walk in whole-hearted faith with God. So let us not only reflect on the beginning and the end of the mortal life of the Messiah, but meditate on His teachings daily to understand the foundation of the salvation He offers.
