Christmas is slowly creeping nearer. And, as I watch all my friends take off on their exciting holidays while Im still clocking in at work, Im becoming more and more aware of others who are also still working. Others like Moses. Moses is a security guard at an estate where my husband often stayed when he came to Joburg for work. He was getting ready for a long night shift ahead. There were three of them coming up, he explained, then three day shifts and three days off. It must be hard to maintain a sleeping pattern, I thought, as he went on to tell me about his wife and children at home - one aged 7 and one aged 14. And Christmas? Youre not working, are you? I asked. No, he said, but I dont have big plans. All he knew was that he would be spending it with his family. Which, I think, is the best Christmas plan of all.
