Christopher Walken will play Captain Hook in NBC-TVs live telecast of Peter Pan in December--and I couldnt be happier. Quirky, intense, offbeat--and utterly committed as an actor--he makes the most of any script hes given, on stage or on screen. Hes done 13 Broadway shows. (Ive relished his performances on Broadway in such shows as A Behanding in Spokane and James Joyces The Dead.) He went to Hofstra but dropped out when he got cast, Off0Broadway, in Best Foot Forward, with Liza Minnelli. Hes contributed unforgettable performances to numerous films. Im posting a minute from the film The Dead Zone because that was a favorite Walken performance..... Incidentally, he loves musicals. Hell dig into the role of Captain Hook with glee. No word yet as to which actress will be playing the role of Peter Pan; Walken-as-Hook is the only casting Ive heard s far. But the producer of this special--whos impressed me personally since he was a college kid--has made an inspired call in casting Walken. NBC-TV scored a huge ratings success with their live telecast of The Sound of Music. I hope they score an even bigger success with this one. Id love to see more Broadway musicals done live on TV....
