Chrysler Just Recalled 792,000 Jeeps Over Ignition Switches Just when you thought ignition switch recalls were solely a General Motors issue, Chrysler has announced that it is recalling as many as 792,000 Jeep models for a switch-related issue. The news comes just a few months after GM began recalling millions of its aging passenger vehicles for ignition switch problems, a figure which now stands at around 12.9 million switch related recalls this year. The models affected in Chrysler’s recent campaign include 2006-2007 Jeep Commanders and 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Like the GM switches, the ignition in the recalled Jeeps can be jostled by the driver’s knee, turning the key to the ‘off’ position and effectively cutting power to the engine, power-assisted steering and brakes, as well as airbags. Chrysler confirms that only one affiliated accident has been reported and that no one was injured, but did reveal that over 100 complaints had been filed. In the case of GM, 13 deaths and 54 accidents were linked to the switch defect, though both automakers reportedly used different suppliers for the switches. Chrysler previously recalled 892,000 Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, and Dodge Journey vehicles earlier this month citing switch-related problems. If you find yourself in one of these cars today, the company suggests using only one key to start the car (instead of a bulky key ring) and warns drivers from sitting with their knees close to the ignition.
