But in order that it may not seem to be surprising for anyone of you, I am, in this legal investigation and public trial, when this case is conducted before the Praetor of the Roman People, a most excellent man, and before the most severe judges, with such a great assembly of men and multitude (attending), employing this style of speaking, which someone might oppose not only from the conduct of trials, but also from legal diction, I beg from you that in this case you all may grant this favor, being appropriate, to me for this affair; as I hope, (it is) not annoying for you, to allow me, speaking on behalf of a superior poet and very accomplished man before this crowd of very literate men, this humanitas (culture) of yours, at last this praetor of the trial presiding, to speak a little more freely concerning the pursuits of the humanities and literature, and in the adopted role of his manner, which, on account of leisure and studies, is never dragged into the perilous court system, to employ almost a certain new and unfamiliar style of speaking.
