Cinco de Mayo (known also as La Batalla de Puebla) is a celebration of the battle that took place in Puebla (neighbour state of Mexico City) in which the French, lead by Napoleon III tried to take Mexico as a french monarchy and thus eradicating Mexicos Constituional Power. The mexican army lead by the general Ignacio Zaragoza stopped the french in Puebla after a long battle, [EDIT] but the french armies made their way to the capital and took Mexico back to an Empire and not a Republic. A few years later, Mexicans rebelled and took back their independence. (Thanks, Rogerio Villarreal) Anyways, all mexican states remember this date with respect but we dont really party over it. The only place where its celebrated a bit more (with a militar parade on this date) is Puebla, obviously. Quick note: our NATIONAL celebration is on September the 16, which is Mexicos Independence Day.
