Cindy Chamberlain Wittkopp, Unfortunately, it is because of these so called scholarly people that divorce and remarriage is so rampant, not only in the world, but in the professing church. What I have found, which is troubling to me, is that most all of the commentaries I have come across do not deal with Rom. 7:2-3 and I Cor. 7:39. Those that do deal with Rom 7 do not include I Cor. 7:39, acting as if Romans stands alone when it clearly does not (Paul preached marriage until death to 2 different churches). When I do see the two dealt with, they insert OTHER allowances into the text (which are NOT there) and by so doing, totally change the analogy given by Paul. Paul was clearly teaching there is only 1 way to be joined with Christ, not many. His analogy of only 1 way to be FREED from marriage and joined to another was a perfect analogy. The only way to be freed from a marriage covenant is death.
